Veggie

March 2023 | “It is not veggie, it’s salad”

After traveling in Europe for a month, I arrived in England and spent time with a family friend. One day, I mentioned that I had been craving vegetables. Literally, I was yearning for green-colored food. No offense, I love “white-people” – European food. In fact, I love food from every culture! However, I found European food to be too hearty and heavy. It typically contains fewer veggies than I would normally include in my diet.

So, here’s the story: with my family friend, we went to the grocery store. I went to the aisle and picked some leafy greens just to satisfy my craving for greens. Once we got back to home, I assembled a salad. My host giggled and told me that we call it “salad,” and when we refer to vegetables, we usually mean veggies that we can cook with, like carrots, broccolis, etc., for example… *Disclaimer: she was an English teacher at the known university in Singapore!

It’s just a cultural thing; neither of us was wrong, it’s just how we were brought up. I know, I take food very seriously.
